Rally squirrel makes Cards World Series rings

St. Louis--The small rodent considered a good omen during the St. Louis Cardinals playoff run last season is just one of the features of the ball club’s diamond and ruby championship rings unveiled Friday.

Crafted by Minneapolis-based Jostens, the top of the Cardinals’ 2011 World Series Championship rings feature the team’s bird-on-bat logo crafted of 14 faceted red rubies and surrounded by a 14-karat yellow gold frame and 103 round diamonds. The rest of the ring is 14-karat white gold.

On one side, there is a “StL” emblem filled with 28 rubies along with the player’s name, jersey number and the so-called “Rally Squirrel” (top photo below). This now-famous rodent darted across home plate when the Cardinals were playing the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League division series and was adopted by players and fans as a good omen and mascot, of sorts, for the team. The squirrel is squeezed in between the “StL” and home plate logos.

The opposite side of the ring (bottom photo above) has the Gate 3 Bridge for Busch Stadium, the Cardinals’ home field, and an eight ruby-embellished “11,” a nod to the number of times the ball club has won the World Series over the years. Under the 11 is a listing of all the years in which the Cardinals captured the title.

Custom engraved on the inside of the ring is the results of the three series the Cardinals won en route to the World Series as well as the phrase, “Happy Flight,” a motto adopted by the players when they began winning many games at the end of road trips in the second half of the season.

“Jostens is honored to have the opportunity to work with the St. Louis Cardinals to design and produce their 11th World Series Championship ring,” said Chris Poitras, director of sports sales and marketing for Jostens. “Working with (Cardinals President) Bill Dewitt III and the Cardinals, Jostens master jewelers artistically translated the team’s unique story into a stunning ring.”
